The project

One hospital. Thirty-one buildings. Twenty-two kilometres of corridors.

The New Odense University Hospital is the largest and most technically demanding construction project ever undertaken in Denmark.

Commissioned by the Region of Southern Denmark and built by the Odense Hospital Project Team J/V, it spans 250,000 m² across 31 buildings, all connected through a continuous network of corridors, on a total site of 860,000 m².

Two hospital blocks are linked underground via logistic tunnels running beneath an active city railway, and above ground by three 47-metre span bridges crossing it.

Monitoring an environment like this during active construction, thousands of workers, shifting structures, extreme winter conditions, is, by any measure, an exceptional engineering challenge.

Neuroject’s role

Not a vendor. An embedded partner for five years.

Neuroject was embedded within the Odense Hospital Project Team as the technical and digital consulting function, not called in for a single deliverable, but continuously involved in shaping how the project managed itself digitally from 2019 to completion.

This kind of engagement requires understanding a project deeply enough to design solutions that fit the actual operational reality on the ground, not a theoretical version of it.

01 Worker Safety

Wearable IoT for safety & GDPR-compliant presence tracking

The problem

Thousands of workers operating across 31 buildings simultaneously. The risk of an unnoticed incident was serious and constant: a fall, a loss of consciousness, someone isolated in an unsealed area.

The device

Fall and unconsciousness detection. Embedded temperature sensor verifying the 15°C Danish winter minimum. Helmet-mount and badge formats, certified and swappable across helmet-free work phases.

Privacy by design

Zone-counting infrastructure. No personal data stored, no individual tracking. Workers identified only by presence within a defined area, situational awareness without compromise.

Network engineering

Multi-frequency anchor mesh, engineered for prefabricated concrete panels and triple-glazed facades that would have defeated a single-frequency approach.

02 Environment

The problem

During Scandinavian winters, a partially sealed site of this scale is almost impossible to manage manually. Temperature and humidity had to be correct, for the workers, the materials and the drying processes that must complete before the next installation phase can begin.

The system

More than 100 wireless IoT sensors deployed across the buildings, feeding a real-time monitoring dashboard with instant alerts on threshold breaches.

The outcome

Removed the need for daily physical checks across 300 fan coils connected through 40 km of heating hoses, delivering better temperature balance, less heat loss and a measurably more efficient heating operation.

03 Onboarding

Safety awareness training, delivered at scale

The challenge

Deploying a wearable IoT safety system across thousands of workers is not a technical problem alone, it is a human one. Neuroject designed and delivered the full onboarding programme for the safety infrastructure at New OUH.

The session

Each session combined a structured safety briefing with hands-on device distribution, walking workers through the device’s purpose, how to mount it correctly and what fall detection, unconsciousness detection and zone monitoring could and could not do.

The reach

Sessions ran on a rolling basis as new subcontractors arrived, in multiple languages, across contractor groups with very different safety cultures. Every worker left with a configured, active device and a clear understanding of why it was there.

Automated drone flights covered the external envelope on a regular cadence. Internal 360° photography documented every floor, corridor and MEP installation phase, a navigable visual history the whole team could access from anywhere.

Drone photogrammetry produced aerial orthomaps and 3D surface models of the full site. Tripod scanning captured interiors with the precision needed for clash detection and as-built verification, a measurable baseline at every stage.

A real-time digital twin integrated worker presence, environmental sensor feeds and structural monitoring, overlaid on an interactive map of all 31 buildings. For the first time, leadership could see the full site state in a single, continuously updated view.
